This is a great idea, and I have a question for which I'm starting to seek an answer, so let me see if this is the place.

I produce a site (www.bldworld.org) in Dreamweaver and ftp it to the server. I want to let someone create and ftp their own material to a subsection of that site, but I don't want to give them the main access password information.

I can do this easily when I'm running a server *here*, but need to know the essential steps to take to do this safely when the site data is on the GoDaddy server.

Is this the sort of thing I would ask my server guy?

The "multiple FTP users" feature is currently only available on our Linux shared hosting plans.  You can always migrate your account to a Linux plan for free - but I see that you are running a Windows-based website, and so this might not be a good fit for you.  For more info on how this works on our Linux plans please see here:  http://help.godaddy.com/article.php?article_id=1235&topic_id=80

Thanks for the feedback, and we'll take your feature request seriously!

As an alternative (since converting to php is a huge task) if I were to sign up for an additional basic web hosting plan, what's the prospect of integrating that seamlessly into an existing site? It would be sort of like the way unix can mount separate block devices as directories on the root tree.

I can always put in a redirect on the existing site, but the unix model would be an elegant solution.

        Possible?

Multiple Windows shared hosting accounts currently cannot be integrated, in the way you're suggesting.

We agree that the "multiple FTP users" model we use on Linux would be a great feature for our Windows plans too.

Yes, you may host multiple URLs from a single Deluxe or Premium hosting account, using domain aliasing.  You can create directories in your main account, then map each domain to its own directory.

    Hello,

Could you tell why do have Register_Globals set to ON in the php configurations for the shared hosting?

Having Register_Globals set to ON is a security risk that has been written about for quite some time now. In fact, PHP 5.0 no longer supports Register_Globals, at all. It would be much wise to set this configuration to the OFF state in the master php.ini file. Correct?

      Hi,

For all new customers register_globals is off by default for both PHP 4 and 5.  The customer can override this in their own PHP.ini file if they want.  For legacy customers it is still enabled, though they can turn off for their account in their own php.ini file. We can't go and turn off globally for existing customers as it would potentially break 1000s of sites.

One of the GoDaddy help pages referring to Value Applications states: "To redirect visitors to a value application that is not installed in your Web site's root directory, you can use JavaScript." This seems to indicate that value applications can be installed in the root directory, but when setting up DotNetNuke, the system requires that a virtual directory be set up. I have attempted to use the root directory to no avail. The instructions on the help page state: "7. Enter the name of the virtual directory under which DotNetNuke will run." How can I move the virtual directory to the root directory so that I don't need to use a javascript to redirect people? I can't seem to find any way to do it with the GoDaddy file manager. I can't even find a place to rename the virtual directory. Is the only way to change it to delete it?

Currently, when installing DotNetNuke as a Value Application, you can only install the application into a virtual directory (and there is not a way to rename this virtual directory once it is setup.)  We'll take both of those items as feature requests.

If these restrictions won't work for you, it is always possible to install DotNetNuke yourself (http://www.dotnetnuke.com/.)  A custom install like this is also the better way to go if you plan on modifying the code or the database schema -- since you'll then have full control over the files and database.

BUT even though I'm not exactly a novice - I feel lost with this system. Even this Blog - I'm not sure how this works. It isn't exactly a forum/bulletin board. So, does a certain number of GoDaddy people make entries and those of us subscribed (to whatever an "entry" or "blog" means) put our questions in the form of comments to those entries?

I hope this doesn't sound like a complaint - it isn't. I just need to know how it works so I know how to hit it with my REAL questions.

Articles/Entries are only written by myself and my managers.  We are the team that runs the hosting operation here at Go Daddy.  So we post an article and you can choose to leave a comment for us on that article if you want.  You can really ask any question you want, just please keep it somewhat related to hosting and something you think many people would be interested in learning/knowing.  If  it is general support problem, for example your webiste is down or you can't publish with Frontpage, your best bet is to call or email support.  They work 24x7 and will help you a lot quicker than we can in most cases.

      Jean,

Not bad questions at all, here is our attempt at answering them.

      What's a trackback?

Trackbacks are a way of notifying a blog entry that you've written
related information , usually on your blog ,that people involved with
the original conversation would find relevant.  E.g  Godaddy hosting
blog writes something interesting . You write on your own blog  "hey
here's an interesting post on the Godaddy blog and then link to post
with the trackback url (  how this is achieved varies depending on
blogging platform.  Some require you  post the trackback link into a
separate field  yet  others autodetect it )

our help defines Trackbacks rather dryly as...

"A trackback sends a ping to another trackback-aware Web site (usually
another blog) to notify that site that a link to has been created,
usually within an entry being posted. The trackback ping notifies the
subject of an entry that they are mentioned in another blog."

What's the difference between a "blog" and an "entry" when you
      subscribe?

Blog subscribes you to all future entries of the blog
Entry subscribes you to all future comments  on this entry
Subscribing to all comments is only available from the syndication
      section which conveniently follows

What does "syndicate this Blog" mean?

      "Syndicate this blog"

Syndication is a means by which the content on the blogsite can be used
by third parties  such as blogs, websites and rss aggregators. We
provide  feeds ( RSS and Atom) for this purpose. More detailed
      information can be found at
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_syndication

What happens when you subscribe? What
rights/requirements/responsibilities do you get when you subscribe to
      'entry' or 'blog'?

When you subscribe we send a confirmation mail asking you to verify that
you did indeed want to be mailed content from this blog. If you  reply
we start sending you mail based on your choice of entries/ blog for any
new material that is posted. Every mail we send you has an opt out
button to stop mails that takes effect immediately.  The blog owner
does not know your email address unless you chose to give it to them
      while commenting.

      I hope this helps some.

      Thanks for your post.

We don't officially support this update process and we know some folks have had issues with it.   Possibly you can try their updater first and if that doesn't work go with the reprovision.

I hope this helps, if you need more help contact our support organization.

      Thanks for your post.

Please provide some tips on modifying custom ASP.Net apps from Framework 1.1 to Framework 2.0 (ASP.Net 2.0). It is annoying that GoDaddy chooses to disable some features of IIS (5.0 and above) which allow one to run different framework versions for different virtual directories. Thanks.

Melvin - it's true that our control panel only supports configuring one version of the .NET Framework on a single hosting account (either 1.1 or 2.0) -- but you do have the flexibility to choose which version works best for you, and automatically change versions whenever you would like.  Also, we can certainly consider the possibility of setting different virtual directories within a site to support different framework versions as a feature enhancement.

But it sounds like you're running into troubles upgrading your ASP.NET 1.1 apps to run under 2.0?  Are there particular features that you're having trouble with, or believe might be disabled on our servers?

      Thanks,

We will take a look at this.  We don't normally rush out updates unless there is a security problem.  However, we will add this one to the list to be updated asap.

      Thanks for your post.

Mike-I was suggesting that the software be upgraded because the old version can be invaded by spammers. That has been my experience when I installed the Advanced Guestbook 2.3.1. The provider noted that the new version has some features that will arrest these spammers.

How does one stop their site in order to make changes (such as an upgrade to my CS installation) to files with the limited access we're awarded by the hosting manager?

    Hi,
Perhaps I should not have to stop to make normal changes within the extremely modified version of CS contained as a value app, but since I need to have full functionality of CS, I have done my own installation, which I've modified. I'm attempting an upgrade to CS 2.1 for new functionality, and if I'm to follow the developers' instructions, I should stop the site. I'm going to proceed w/o, just for fun...

    Cheers,

    So annoyed.

You did great to add option like joomla.
Yet it installs in it's own directory and there is no easy way to edit htaccess with any of the tools you provide.

Instructions in bloga and articles are completely cryptic.

Couple of suggestion, either make the apps install where they are usable or remove them.

Alternatively get some serious technical writers to provide good instructions.

So theoretically I can place a line in a .htaccess file.?However where do I place that file Using only tools that you provide. Say the online FTP client?

I cant seem to get to the root directory from there

      John -

I'm glad that you're enjoying the addition of Joomla to our list of free add-on applications.

We currently don't have a web-based tool to help you edit your .htaccess files, but this is an important item on our development roadmap.  We're looking to address this in the near future.

The add-on apps on linux do install into your user directory, accessible from FTP.
