Okay, So I Have a Hosting Account. Now What?

I know just how you feel. You've taken the plunge, moved into getting your own site, and are now sitting there staring at that huge disk space available number and thinking "what on Earth am I going to put in all that space"?

Fear not, my friend. Help has arrived.

I'm Jon, one of the technical writers here at Go Daddy®. Pleased to meet you! One of the many cool things I get to do in my job is explain to our customers what they can do with their hosting-accounts and how to do it as painlessly as possible based on their experience. Whether you're starting out on your first site and need to know the difference between an index.html file and a default.htm file or you're a Ruby-seasoned netizen that wants to push the limits of your Gems, I'm your man.

“So what can I do with that Web hosting account?” I hear you cry! Well, the answer is...LOTS!

First of all, you need to build your site. The options are literally endless, from hand coding HTML in Notepad, to Web design programs like Macromedia® Dreamweaver® and Microsoft® FrontPage®, to WebSite Tonight®, Go Daddy’s own Web site building tool.

With WebSite Tonight you can choose from more than 800 professionally designed templates, add in your own photos and graphics, and type your text. Then POOF! You have a professional looking Web site that looks you either spent hours creating or paid thousands of dollars to have created, all from within your Web browser.

If you’re interested in “getting your feet wet” in the world of Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) coding, there are lots of resources available on the Web, from the W3C® HTML Home Page to the Webmonkey® HTML Basics, where you’ll be able to find a great HTML cheat sheet as well as information on Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and HTML Color Codes.

“Okay, so now I have a site. What the heck can I do with it?”

Some of the most popular sites on the Web right now are blog sites, like this one for instance. Blogs allow you to have a virtual podium on the Web, a digital "Speaker's Corner" if you will, where you can write about your thoughts, opinions, or anything else that strikes your fancy and post it for the world to see. While there are many commercial sites that allow you to post blogs on their sites, you can do everything they can do, and more, with your own blog on your own site. Plus, you have total control, which after all, is why you wanted to host your own Web site in the first place. Right?

Go Daddy offers several blogging options for you to use on your new hosting account. From our own powerful QuickBlog system, to the award winning WordPressTM and Serendipity, there are lots of options for you to look at to get your feet wet in the Blogosphere.

But wait! There's a hand in the back row! "What about photo albums? What is Content Management?”

Those are great questions!

Content Management is a term used to describe the organization of documents, photos and other digital content on a Web site using page templates, wizards, and other software. Its purpose is to help content authors create higher-quality and most importantly, standard output across their Web site. Go Daddy offers free Content Management applications for your site, such as DotNetNukeTM and Joomla! which not only give you a professional looking site right out of the gate without the headache, but also let you organize all your digital assets (think blogs, pictures, etc.) into one cohesive format in your Internet home, your Web site.

Do not take us for stupids and send us to the same pages we've already told you we've seen.
What you advertize on your hosting plan does NOT match what you eventually are offering

Again the page your sending us to "Value Applications" does NOT list

ASP.NET 2.0 Personal Web site starter Kit
ASP.NET 2.0 Club Site Starter Kit

You should at least apologize and correct what you advertize or we will file a complaint with the BBB.
In my original mail we asked about missing starter kits. DO NOT REPLY TO US ABOUT HOW TO LOGIN OR ABOUT LOST PASSWORDS. The subject line is very specific and simple question. It says nothing about us not knowing how to log in or that we have some how misplaced our password.

This is NOT the treatment we expected out of Godaddy.com.

Two things. First of all, why does your blog not offer the option of posting new threads? This seems to be contrary to the basic idea of a blog. If your blog allowed users to post topics, it would enable the community to post and discuss the issues that are affecting them. As is, your blog is of limited use to anyone, other than as a PR tool for GoDaddy.

Secondly, I have a technical issue which would be an excellent topic for such a blog. I am attempting to implement a custom php.ini file for my virtual dedicated server. This option is supported on my server, according to the documentation that I can find on the subject (search for php.ini on help.godaddy.com). Unfortunately, I don't have permissions to overwrite the existing php.ini file, or to post a new file to the php.d directory, which is where php would be able to find it. I'm sure that someone else in the GoDaddy hosting community has probably already solved this problem. If anyone can be of any assistance, please respond to this post or email to scott at printelectric dot com.

    Thanks!

      Scott,

You need to be 'root' to add files to the /etc/php.d directory, or overwrite the existing php.ini file.

Login with SSH to your VPH server using your normal account (also called 'unprivileged account').  Then run the command ' su ' and enter the root user's password to change to a shell with "root privileges"

In one of your posts which I can no longer find you asked for scenarios not met by your hosting plans. Here's one. I want to run a small website with limited bandwidth at low cost on Drupal. Drupal is one of the best CMS' around. It's awesome. It's better than the CMS' you provide for Linux, imho, by far. Trouble is godaddy won't support it without going way overkill on monthly expenditure, bandwidth, etc. On our virtual shared hosting plan I would have almost everything I need except I can't put in cron tasks or ask for them to be put in by a qualified admin, and my database user doesn't have the create temporary tables privilege and (probably though I can't tell with this limited set of tools) the lock table privilege in my own database. For this, say the support folks, I need to pay at least $25 more per month. Or I could go to other hosting companies for almost the same price I pay for virtual shared hosting and get everything I need. The other Drupal websites I admin on providers like bluehost are only about $5 a month but I have those features and more on shared equipment. What gives guys?

I have no personal experience with Drupal, but I can comment on Vded hosting.  You are the root level admin of a vded server, which means you can run your MySQL database any way you like.  If you purchased with Plesk, Simple Panel or cPanel, and are using it's interface to setup your databases, you may need to login to your MySQL server via command line to escalate your user permissions.

Easy MySQL command to escalate your user's priv's:
      GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON mydatabase.* TO myusername@'localhost';

Tip: Trick to logging into MySQL as root when you're running Plesk:  the root user is actually named admin, so:
      mysql -u admin -p
... to login, and use your Plesk admin password.

As far as cron is concerned, not a problem on vded.  Just login, "su -" to become root and "crontab -e"

      Best of Luck,

      Dave.

It is possible to connect directly to your MySQL DB using one of the various 3rd-party tools that support "tunnelling".  One example of this is Navicat.

Navicat has an option to use a tunnel through a .php page.  This was specifically built with hosters like us in mind.

      How it works:

      1) Purchase/Install Navicat, or other 3rd-party tool with this ability.  There is at least 1 other I'm aware of and have tested, but it's name escapes me at the moment.

      2) Navicat will provide a file to upload to your account, such as "mysql-tunnel.php".  Put this file somewhere on your site.

      3) Setup Navicat to connect to the tunnel at:  "http://myhostingsite.com/mysql-tunnel.php".  Give Navicat the hostname of your mysql DB (such as 'mysql144.secureserver.net'), the database name, your database username and password, and then test the connection.

If all goes well,  you will have the full featured mysql DB management capabilities of Navicat (or similar tool) with your GoDaddy MySQL DB.

For the personal / non-business hosting, GoDaddy is hits all the major features someone might want /instead/ of getting a full shared or dedicated hosting account.

i.e. Instead of getting a shared hosting account and making a static site and/or with Metropolis applications, someone would get WebSiteTonight, and/or get QuickBlog, and/or get OnlinePhotoFiler, and/or get OnlineGroupCalendar, etc.

Individually, those GoDaddy Quick/Online/Tonight features work okay, and are suitable for someone who didn't have anything more specific in mind.

What detracts for me is the lack of template/CSS customization in these "pre canned" GoDaddy services, the low number of choices for pre-supplied themes in absence of this customization, and a lack of a common / unified theme across all features for customers with multiple service types.

This makes it feel like an unpolished and unpleasing way to try and make a single "web pages + blog + pictures" site, by getting separate WebSiteTonight + QuickBlog + OnlinePhotoFiler accounts and then trying to sew them together.

Yes, get a shared hosting account and install one or more of the Metropolis applications.

I've done that, and am currently taking a run at Joomla! + Coppermine. (http://alanadams.org/)

But its been very "steep" for me, someone who would have probably been happy if GoDaddy just had a "WebBlogPhotoTonight" application that made it easy to have and manage all of these features in a site that actually looked unified.

Nor do any of the available Metropolis applications actually perform all these features out of the box; I’m still left trying to sew systems together myself.

The available Linux applications seem to jump straight from "Blog only", "photos only" and "blog + website" to "full CMS" with no in-between.

Even though the applications would be "fixed" and unchangeable, the GoDaddy "WebBlogPhotoTonight" account would be a single site that looked like it belonged together & that could at least be customized with a unified template to make it look more unique even though its off-the-shelf GoDaddy service.

Which is where I expect I’ll probably be once I dumb down Joomla! to my level & find the most reliable bridges or modules that perform the features I want. But I didn’t need full CMS or application customization to begin with; I just need those "major features" GoDaddy already singled out. I just want to integrate them better and more easily on a single & visually distinct site.

Throwing a couple Metropolis suggestions out:

    - The more I’ve investigated the Metropolis Linux applications, the more I’m thinking I may actually go back to Windows & Community Server for one of my sites. So stay on top of the latest CS GoDaddy can offer.

    - Community Server was notably slow (without my even having added any content yet) before I switched my account over to Linux to try those CMS options, so performance of CS on shared hosting might be a place to look too.

Thanks for the compliments.  Let me address some of the concerns.

Customized CSS for Quick Shopping Cart and other site builders are coming, along with more (and better) templates.
The common theme problem, all I can say is good suggestion.  It would be great if you could buy a number of site builders and seam them together in style.  We will start thinking about how to do "WebBlogPhotoTonight".  Maybe we'll call it that!  Just kidding, but it gets the point across

Metropolis will be harder to address for common them, it's a collection of third party apps, pretty hard to get them to all have a common theme/framework.  I imagine you'll be waiting longer for this one.

      Thanks for your Metropolis suggestions.

      Dave.

You are the best host I ever using.
Only thing you must to do is to allow CRON jobs on Linux shared hosting accounts.

    Best regards
    and sorry for bad english.

I just got a free Linux account (I didn't realize that I had 7 credits that I can use... all that domain registration loyalty pays off . Anyway, I am trying to confirm that I *cannot* do the following things (I tried to find in control panel, but to no avail):

    1. I don't have email at this account.
    2. I don't have SSH access on this account.
    3. I don't have command-line MySQL account.
    4. There is no way to create a directory that is inaccessible by the browser (I know about .htaccess; I am trying to confirm that .htaccess is the only option. If document root of my account is in the directory that looks like .../myname/html/ - I can't create a directory .../myname/private
    5. I don't have cgi-bin directory
    6. You don't have "usual" binaries (ImageMagick, zip, etc.) pre-installed.

Don't get me wrong - I am not trying to bash the service after just 5 hours of using it (especially, since it's free). I just don't want to chase things that don't exist.

Email is a separate service from web hosting.  You will need to setup email for your domain(s) seperately, if you want email "hosting" services.

      No SSH access.

No command-line MySQL.  Web-based access is provided by phpMyAdmin.  Alternatively, you could look into one of the mysql admin applications that let you upload a "proxy" web page to your site.  These apps can give you a fairly rich interface to any MySQL db.

      No cgi-bin with free hosting.

Yes, ImageMagick binaries, zip binaries, are installed.

I already have a domain name and a hosting account with godaddy.
I bought another domain name today. I was wondering if I can host that using my current hosting account?

I used the domain-management area and added this new domain, but I don't want it to point to the homepage of my old website.

Sure - you can either change the domain name on your current hosting account to use the new domain, or you can add the domain name as an "alias domain" to your account.  With the deluxe and premium plans, you can point the alias domain to a subdirectory, which makes your website look like a separate hosting account.

I just moved servers from someone else to godaddy and I have to say that it's been a great experience. Sales and support people have been awesome. My only issue now lies with my ISP's cache, because everyone but me can get to my website. I can't set anything up until then. I wish there was some way around this besides waiting. Thanks for everything, godaddy!

Glad you like our service, we're glad to have you as a customer!

You can add your domain and www.domain to your C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc\Hosts file and trick your desktop into thinking the DNS has already propogated.  Actually, what happens, is your browser will read this file and bypass the DNS lookup.  This way you can see your site before the DNS has propogated.

Need some advice to decide whether I should use Website tonight or Quick blog product. I would like to have links with different topics(purchasing, shipping etc..) on left pane. While clicking the link it should open up different pages on right pane. On right pane users should be able to post questions and others should be able to post answers - similar to blog sites.

Can some one please give me some guidance?

I can think of a couple options you may want to try:

      1)  A Website Tonight (WST) account with our new forums component

      2)  A linux shared hosting account.  Then, install Joomla through our Metropolis system.

Our non-profit organization uses Yahoo!Groups for mailing-list services. I'd like to move that over to my web hosting account, but GoDaddy blocks POP3 access on port 110.

When you roll out CRON services (now, on your roadmap) will it allow secure connections to POP3 or IMAP servers?

Alternatively, would GoDaddy consider adding a mailing list option (like Mailman) for web host accounts?

Cron services are now rolled out. I'd love to see Mailman or something similar on GoDaddy shared hosting. Besides your crazy hold music, this is the only major thing I'd like to see you add.

We appreciate your suggestion. We are always looking for ways to improve our offerings. At this time we do not have any plans to add Mailman to our hosting environment.
Your request has been forwarded to the development group so that they can review this option as they prepare our next roll outs.

First, you need to make sure that you have a Linux hosting account. Once you do you will need to enable JSP/Servlets under Add On Languages in the HostingControlCenter. Please use the following link from our help center on how to add a Java Servlet to your website.
