Welcome to Metropolis!
It's a bird! It's a plane!
No, it's the new Hosting Metropolis from GoDaddy!
In addition to being the home of Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Superman, a metropolis throughout history has been the center of...
population,
cultural exchange, and;
trade and commerce.
Now, GoDaddy has its own metropolis, Hosting Metropolis—the center for all things related to hosting applications.
A new hosting community, Hosting Metropolis will allow anyone with a Go Daddy hosting account to research, install, manage, rate, and review third-party applications to enhance their Web site. All of this is available from the Value Applications link in your Hosting Control Panel.
Not sure whether this application you’re looking at is right for you and your site?
Want some independent information on the ins and outs of the program?
No problem, Metropolis has you covered.
It’s not just a software installing engine, it’s also a community. It’s a forum of people just like you and me, looking for the best apps for their site and documenting the pinnacles and pitfalls of each and every application in the ratings/reviews section on every application’s information page. There you’ll find unbiased reviews from everyday users as well as profiles about the reviewers (but you only have to give as much info as you’re comfortable with). So, if you find someone with similar issues (be they good or otherwise) you can communicate with them directly and collaborate. That’s what Metropolis is all about, collaboration.
Best of all, not only have all of these apps have not only been vetted by Go Daddy's Hosting gurus to be at the top of their categories, but they have been streamlined to make installation a breeze.
How many of you have cruised "the internets" and found the coolest Web app ever; downloaded it, installed it and messed with it for hours only to find it isn't compatible with your hosting configuration? (I'm raising my hand here too, by the way). I don’t know how many of you have tried to install osCommerce from scratch, but take it from me, it’s no picnic. Not where you want to be, my friend.
Metropolis takes all the pain out of installing web apps. Everything is point and click. No confusing menus, no installation scripts and best of all, no command line. Just choose the application you want to install, answer a few simple questions about where you would like to put it, and Poof! it’s installed and ready to go in a matter of hours. GoDaddy takes care of all the heavy lifting.
Again, those awesome developers and hosting guys at GoDaddy (okay, so I may be a little biased) have come to the rescue. When you click on the application's details page, it will not only show you the system requirements, but also whether or not that application is compatible with your hosting plan and give you the option of upgrading your hosting plan to support the application. Now that is just cool.
Metropolis has more than 30 free software titles available and with more being added frequently. So, get over to Metropolis and have a look around, you won’t be disappointed. Here, take my keys…

I've used the service and it works just fine. My question is in regards to upgrades. I use wordpress 2.05 and I know that 2.06 has several updates that I'd like to take advantage. Do I have to uninstall what I have to get Metropolis to assist me? I hope not.

Currently WordPress version 2.0.6 is not available via Metropolis. We are looking into adding support for this version via an upgrade path in the near future.

i think this is a great service but if you want to make it great add drupal to your list
because drupal is like a blog system and a contact management and so much more in one
that would make it spectacular but thats just my thoughts
thanks for reading i hope you consider my idea

We are looking into Drupal support. However, Drupal requires that we support cron jobs on our linux servers, which we don't currently support. So this will be a few months out.
Thanks,
Mike

any update on Drupal?

We're currently working on a few system pre-reqs (including cron support) -- keep checking back...you should see it fairly soon.

i forgot to mention that i think you should do this for your dedicated server and virtual servers too.but not only web applications but software like icecast vintrilo etcbecause that would help me alot i have realised you have an assisted server plan for your dedicated but none for us virtual

We want to add Metropolis like features for Virtual sometime in the near future. For Dedicated it will be tough, as we don't have control over the server itself. For now you can purchase cPanel and install Fantastico, which does something very similar to Metropolis.
Thanks,
Mike

Look like it is good place for simply installing applications.
Do you plan add Drupal to CMS list?
Look like current hosting support it, but it is difficult to configure it manualy with supporting Clean URL's and Search engine such as CREATE TEMPORALY TABLE for mySQL needed.

Correct, Drupal needs cron jobs and additional rights to MySQL. We are looking at now, but we don't have a planned date for deployment. We understand that a lot of folks want it, so look for it in the near future.
Thanks,
Mike

Gabriel - I'm glad you're enjoying Metropolis! As for the problem you're having with oscommerce, it's tough to tell what the problem is without more account info. I've forwarded your question on to our support organization who can provide you with more assistance.

Hi guys (Scott/Mike): i installed both Coppermine and Gallery on my site, and read the comments from other GoDaddy users to see what folks liked/disliked. I noticed others who couldn't initially get their uploaded photos to display on the page, in Gallery - same case fro me. An image placeholder (an empty box the shape of the image) shows up for an instant as the page loads, but the image does not display. Other wise the App seems to work as advertised. (No problems with Coppermine.)
Any ideas
thanks

rim - for the current version of Gallery, you will need to also install the GD module to make the thumbnails work. Unfortunately, you will need to install this module manually. However, this issue is fixed in the latest version of Gallery, which we plan to deploy in the next couple weeks.
