Hosting Control Center - File Manager

Sharp-eyed Shared Hosting customers may have noticed a new option in their Hosting Control Center this week -- a 'File Manager', available under the 'Content' section.  Currently it is only available for our Linux Shared Hosting customers, but we'll be adding support for our Windows accounts soon.

The new File Manager is just what you would expect -- a graphical interface to your Shared Hosting account's contents.  Now, instead of using an FTP client to manage your files, you're able to do many of the same actions in an easy-to-use interface.  Drag and drop files to move or copy them, select many files for deletion, create new
directories, even upload and download files to and from your hosting account.

In addition to the standard file operations, we've included a 'filmstrip' view which allows you to easily browse images located in your hosting account.

We're excited about the current features of the File Manager, but we're more excited about what's to come.  Now that the new framework is in place, stay tuned for easy-to-use interfaces on things such as password-protecting directories, modifying file and directory permissions, and uploading and downloading many files at once.  We've got a few other tricks up our sleeve, so stay tuned for future announcements!

As always, we enjoy hearing feedback and feature requests for our new products.  Please feel free to let us know what you're thinking, either through our email address (hostingsuggestions@secureserver.net) or by replying to this article.

Julian - I can see that your account is currently running on Windows shared.  The Windows version of the file manager is still in development, but you can still use the usual FTP upload processes to publish your site.

When do you think the windows file manager will be finished? I'd like to setup a folder to use as uploads for users of my site but don't want them to have access to the rest of my site through ftp.

We will look to add five additional FTP users in a section called 'Manage FTP Users'. You will be able to add users and three primary options for level of access.
          • Type in the subdirectory you want to use.
          • Use the root level directory (access to your entire hosting account).
          • Create a new directory using the new FTP user name.

You are right, it would be very helpful for quick changes and that is why it is on our list. Look for that to be released in the near future.
      Thanks!

Just wondering, you said look for this in the near future, is that soon? I am using joomla installed through "Hosting Connection" maybe a TinyMCE WYSIWYG editor would do the trick for this?

It would be great if it could 'upzip' a compressed file on server side. obviously the size of zip file must be limited to avoid of abuse.

    Many thanks

This is a great suggestion that a lot of our customers have been requesting. We are working on the ZIP file format to be released soon.

It would also be helpful to have true download capability to allow one to download the entire website for backup purposes. Right now, you can only download individual files rather than whole directories. This would avoid all the PHP timeout/memory limitations of other scripts on your shared servers.

We are thinking about allowing a directory to be downloaded as a zip file. Though we have not considered adding the capability to download the entire site, we can take a look in to this. I have forwarded your request to the team in charge of the file manager. Thanks for the suggestion!

    Need:
Allow PERMISSION CHANGES. It does me no good to upload a CGI file if I can't change the execute bits.
Don't require DELETING before UP-LOADING. If I attempt to upload a file that's already there, just ask me what I want to do.

The need will soon be fulfilled…permission changes are in the works and will be made available in our next release.
The requirement to delete before uploading an existing file was set up in the initial version to avoid accidental override. We are looking in to some other options to make the upload of an existing file easier. Thanks!

Windows server File Manager is greatly desired, as well as the teasingly mentioned ability to password-protect folders. On the Windows Server side, this is very difficult to accomplish under the current system, and was a feature that I had taken for granted until I signed with GoDaddy! PLEASE give us that ability ASAP!!!

File Manager for Windows is not only greatly desired by many, it is on the way! Look for it to make its appearance shortly. And there is no more need to tease or plead about password protection!  We are also going to make this available, like you said, “ASAP!!!”

Creating Custom Directories on Your Windows Hosting Account

NOTE TO FRONTPAGE USERS: Microsoft FrontPage manages all of the directory and subdirectory permissions on your Web site. If you created custom directories on your Web site, or you are using another tool to build and or manage your Web site, switching to FrontPage may cause some problems. It can overwrite all of your directory permissions and make your site unusable.

Permissions for file manager will soon be here!

In the meantime, to set permissions on a Linux Shared Hosting account, you would need to have access to the hosting account via FTP using an FTP client, such as Filezilla, Fetch, Internet Explore, etc. Once you access your FTP, right-click on the folder you want to set in your hosting directory and select Properties (You will not be able to modify permissions on the stats folder). This will bring up a menu that will provide you different permissions you can apply. For more information on different custom directory permissions please see the article below.

      Different Custom Directory Permissions

Note: The user name for the hosting account will still have full access to all the files regardless of the custom directory permissions.
If using Frontpage you will have to uninstall and reinstall the extensions.

I'm asking about the possibility of being able to give a link to someone or something to someone that would enable them to view all the contents of my folder. Basically, I want to enable the ability of my visitors to view all files in the directory they're in if no index.html or index.htm, etc. is present. So I could have a directory of pictures that would be viewable in a simple directory format (similar to what Apache servers do). Is there any plan to implement this? Is this feature listed here what I'm looking for?

I noticed that you are on a Windows server. You can easily create custom directories to allow your visitors to browse files in a specific directory. Just take a look at the following links.

I have a Linux shared hosting account.

Does the File Manager make using a FTP client redundant?

I can't tell if I need to use a separate FTP client (i.e. gFTP).

    Thank you.

It really depends on your hosting platform and what type of permissions you are trying to set up.
