Windows File Manager

"Windows server File Manager is greatly desired..."
"It would be a great feature for your Windows plans too."
"When do you plan to have File Manager ready for Windows?"

We listened to your suggestions and have now introduced File Manager in to the Windows platform. The current functionality of Windows File Manager mirrors the Linux File Manager’s functionality, but for those of you who are new to File Manager here's how it works.

The File Manager, located in the Hosting Control Center under 'Content', allows you to manage files and directories in lieu of using the standard ftp client. This tool lets you copy, move, rename, and delete both files and directories; upload and download files. Additionally, the File Manager includes a Filmstrip feature that allows you to view all images within a directory.

The great thing is there are more updates to File Manager on the way. In the near future, we will look to expand the features of the File Manager by including password-protecting directories, modifying file and directory permissions, and uploading and downloading multiple files at once.

As always, we have lots of documentation to help you get started.

It would be perfect feature if you could allow clients to create multiple virtual directories with predefined permissions. Creating virtual directories by one by one sometimes being great headache. And it takes too much time to click Confirm button everytime for Windows Plans.
Please consider this enhancement. I can share more details if you want. I have great ideas, please contact me.

Great suggestion! Right now we are working to make permissions a little easier to set via the Windows File Manager we recently released. It will be real time and you will be able to set file level permissions in bulk, but not the IIS portion in bulk. I have already forwarded your suggestion to our developers for further review. Thanks!

I don't understand the conversations about Virtual directories in this file manager section. I've yet to find anything related to virtual directories in any of the hosting tools for GoDaddy windows account. I have File Manager, Domain Mamagement, Directory Management ... no where in these tools is IIS Virtual directories mentioned? Am I missing something?

What you can do is you setup a virtual directory called myvdir in your root folder. This would point to a physical directory called D:\Hosting\<username>\myvdir. You won't be able to setup a virtual directory called myvdir that points to a subdirectory called D:\Hosting\<username>\asubdir\anothersubdir\myvdir.

I am trying to implement a log file, but I cannot write to it due to permissions not being set properly. You mention future enhancements to the Windows File Manager allowing the setting of file permissions, but how do I do this now? I need to grant write access to one file. Thanks.

Until we offer that capability in the File Manager, you can use the following article to set write permissions.

I saw documentation stating to use file manager to allow write to directory with asp. In file manager I do not see any option to set these permissions.

This can be done through our 'File Manager' in the Hosting Control Center. Select the File Name and then click the permissions icon. Please see this article for more details.

I read this artical you posted and it looks like it is for a Linux hosted site, but for the Windows hosted site the permission options you listed are not there. How do you set these permssions on a Windows hosted site?

I've tried using an FTP program, it tells me that the command (CHMOD 666 filename) is not understood. I've tried the GoDaddy File Manager and the FTP client, and still cannot change permissions. Through Windows Explorer, right-clicking on the file I want to change permission for yields "This server does not support changing file permissions." I changed the parent directory of the file to be rw, but still no luck. My account is on IIS 7.0, there doesn't seem to be FrontPage Extensions installed. What do I do?

(this is all to simply set the settings.php in /sites/default/ to rw for my Drupal installation)

File permissions are handled through the File Manager and are per directory only. CHMOD 666 is exclusive to Linux. You can change your account to Linux keeping in mind if your Web site contains certain advanced features, such as ASP or ASP.NET and you select a Linux account, your Web site may no longer function properly after the plan change. Please make sure your Web site does not contain advanced features BEFORE moving to a plan that may not support them or be prepared to modify your Web content accordingly.
